In December of 1993, Gilbert Van Dykhousen of the Monterey Bay Aquarium collected an intact Leptochilichthyid from 2800 m near Monterey Bay, California using a mid-water trawl. Investigated morphometrics and meristics of the specimen conflict with existing descriptions of Leptochilichthyids from the Pacific and around the world. Careful and more extensive comparisons are being made to better determine the classification of this specimen.
